Born in Chicago, IL. In Hollywood initially as a $24-a-week reader for Universal, he won an Academy Award for the original screenplay of THE BACHELOR AND THE BOBBY SOXER (1947). But most of his scripts were routine and his attempts at direction (DREAM WIFE, 1953; THE BUSTER KEATON STORY, 1957; and BUSTER AND BILLIE, 1974) were unsuccessful. He also shared a Tony Award for the libretto of the Broadway musical "Redhead" (1959. In the 70s he suddenly emerged as a successful glitz novelist. Three of his several best sellers, The Naked Face (1970), The Other Side of Midnight (1974) and Bloodline (1977), were adapted to the screen. Sheldon wrote several episodes for "The Patty Duke Show" and "I Dream of Jeannie" television series.
