Born in London, England. Art director and production designer who entered British film as art director for KEEP FIT at Ealing Studios in 1937. He worked as art director, alone or in collaboration, on over 40 British films, including PENNY PARADISE (1938), THE FOUR JUST MEN (1939), CONVOY (1940), THE GHOST OF ST. MICHAEL'S (1941), SHIPS WITH WINGS (1942), GREAT EXPECTATIONS (1946), TAKE MY LIFE (1947), BLANCHE FURY (1948), STATE SECRET (1950), CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY and THE AFRICAN QUEEN (both 1951), BEAT THE DEVIL (1953), STORM OVER THE NILE (1955), PORT AFRIQUE (1956), FORTUNE IS A WOMAN (1957), THE BRIDAL PATH (1959), CONE OF SILENCE (1960), and THE QUEEN'S GUARDS and THE INNOCENTS (both 1961).
In 1948, Shingleton became a production designer. His credits in that capacity include BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE (1948), WHO GOES THERE? (1952), SEA DEVILS (1953), HOBSON'S CHOICE (1954), THE GREEN MAN (1956), SEVEN WAVES AWAY (1957), THE KEY and I WAS MONTY'S DOUBLE (both 1958), TUNES OF GLORY (1960), WALTZ OF THE TOREADORS and TERM OF TRIAL (both 1962), I COULD GO ON SINGING (1963), PROMISE HER ANYTHING (1965), JUDITH and THE BLUE MAX (both 1966), DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES (1967), PRUDENCE AND THE PILL (1968), THE BEST HOUSE IN LONDON (1969), GOODBYE GEMINI (1970), ENDLESS NIGHT and MACBETH (both 1971), THE AMAZING MR. BLUNDEN (1972), VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED (1976), THE LADY VANISHES (1979), EYE OF THE NEEDLE (1981), and his last film, HEAT AND DUST (1983). Shingleton was also production designer for sever episodes of "The Avengers" and "Strange Report" television series, as well as several made-for-TV movies.
