James Stephenson
(1889-1941)
Biography from Quinlan's Film Stars

Born in Selby, Yorkshire, England. One of the cinema's more extraordinary figures. A dark, moustached, tautly handsome British stage actor who made no films until he was nearly fifty. He went to Hollywood in 1938, and, at Warners, advanced slowly to leading roles, revealing a talent and presence that had not been evident in his British films. Then, after only a handful of star parts, he dropped dead from a heart attack. Nominated for portraying Bette Davis' defense lawyer in a trial for murdering her lover.
