Born in Bardichov, Russia; in the US from childhood. He was a newspaper and magazine writer before turning to the stage and films. Among his plays are The Kibitzer and Guys and Dolls, both in collaboration. He wrote numerous quality screenplays for Capra, Borzage, Ford, Mamoulian, Hitchcock, Wyler, and other distinguished Hollywood directors. Among them are PENNIES FROM HEAVEN (1936); THE WESTERNER (1940; BLOOD AND SAND (1941); LIFEBOAT (1944); LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN (1945); and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946).
His son, Jo Swerling Jr. (b. 1931), is a television producer.
