Joseph Than
(1903 - 1985)

Born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria). Austrian writer whose first credit appears in 1915 for the German production of FÜRST SEPPL (Prince Seppl). Other notable credits as writer/scenarist include DAS SÜßE MÄDEL (1926), GAUNER IM FRACK, UNTER AUSSCHLUß DER ÖFFENTLICHKEIT, DIE ACHTZEHNJÄHRIGEN and GLANZ UND ELEND DER KURTISANEN (all 1927), DER PRÄSIDENT, DAS SPIEL MIT DER LIEBE and EIN MÄDEL MIT TEMPERAMENT (all 1928). In 1931, Than began to produce his films in addition to writing them: SCHÖN IS DIE MANÖVERZEIT, MEINE FRAU, DIE HOCHSTAPLERIN and DER DRAUFGÄNGER (all 1931), HEIMKEHR INS GLÜCK and DREI KAISERJÄGER (both 1933), ...NUR EIN KOMÖDIANT (1935) and PARDIS PERDU (1940).

After World War II, Than worked for Columbia and Warner Bros. on such films as NONE SHALL ESCAPE (1944), THE PIRATE (1948, uncredited), SO YOUNG SO BAD (1950) and the TV movie "The Last Half Hour: The Mayerling Story" (1952). Returning to Europe, he wrote JEUNES MARIÉS (1953), MEINE SCHWESTER UND ICH and the German version of ORIENT EXPRESS (both 1954), ESCALE À ORLY (1955) and two episodes for the US TV series "I Spy" (both 1967).
