Born in Atlanta, GA; educated at the University of Georgia. A former newspaperman, he published and edited a motion picture trade magazine before entering films as an assistant to a Fox executive. He began writing screenplays in the early 1930s (initially in collaboration with Dudley Nichols) and producing in the early 1940s. His credits, alone or in collaboration, include many important 20th Century-Fox productions, notably John Ford's YOUNG MR. LINCOLN (1939) and THE OX-BOW INCIDENT (1943).
