Born in London, England. Successful British playwright (I Remember Mama, Voice of the Turtle and Bell, Book and Candle) and director (The King and I on Broadway). Collaborated on several Hollywood screenplays (NIGHT MUST FALL, 1937; GONE WITH THE WIND, 1939 - uncredited; JOHNNY COME LATELY, 1943; GASLIGHT, 1944).
