Born in Oldham, Lancashire, England. One of England's most important concert-hall composers in the 20th century. In addition to composing symphonies, concertos, operas, oratorios, and other musical pieces, he created the scores for a number of important British films, including ESCAPE ME NEVER (1935), AS YOU LIKE IT (1936), MAJOR BARBARA (1941), HENRY V (1944), HAMLET (1948), RICHARD III (1955) and THREE SISTERS (1970).
