Born in Sunrise, MN; grew up in Princeton, IL. Broadway actor whose early roles were often as tough guys or heavies. Widmark earned an Oscar® nomination for his screen debut in the gangster saga KISS OF DEATH (1947) (as a giggling psychopathic killer, he pushed a crippled old lady down a flight of stairs); he played the disinterested hero of Sam Fuller's ambiguous cold-war thriller PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET (1953) and was superb in the title role of Don Siegel's New York cop tale MADIGAN (1968).
Blonde, handsome and athletic, Widmark was also noted for his many westerns (e.g. John Ford's TWO RODE TOGETHER, 1961), and played noted character roles in JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG (1961) and THE BEDFORD INCIDENT (1965, also uncredited producer). Widmark also produced several films, including the spy thriller THE SECRET WAYS (1961, also uncredited director), scripted by wife Jean Hazelwood. His last credited feature film is TRUE COLORS (1991), in which he played Sen. James Stiles.
