Born in London, England; educated at University College, London. A veteran of the Boer War and WW I, a newspaper artist and a librettist, he collaborated on the screenplays of many British, then Hollywood films, including HARMONY HEAVEN (1929), SONG OF SOHO (1930), THE MAN THEY COULDN'T ARREST (1931), MEN OF TOMORROW (1932), THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII (1933), THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL (1934), BREWSTER'S MILLIONS (1935), FORGET ME NOT (1936), KNIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR (1937), THE DIVORCE OF LADY X (1938), THE FOUR FEATHERS (1939), MRS. MINIVER and RANDOM HARVEST (both 1942), IF WINTER COMES (1947), JULIA MISBEHAVES (1948), THE RED DANUBE and THAT FORSYTE WOMAN (both 1949), CALLING BULLDOG DRUMMOND (1951), YOUNG BESS (1953), and his last film, STORM OVER THE NILE (1955, additional dialogue).
