Picture and special effects cinematographer who entered American film as an additional camera operator for Victor Fleming's THE ROUGH RIDERS at Paramount Famous Lasky in 1927. Wimpy worked as cinematographer on a number of "B" pictures from 1929 to 1952, and shot second unit material for THE MISFITS (1961), HUD (1963), and two Hitchcock classics: SPELLBOUND (1945) and PSYCHO (1963), where he was d.p. for the Phoenix unit.
However, it was in special effects that Wimpy found his niche. Beginning with Michael Curtiz's MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM at Warners in 1933, Wimpy provided special effects photography for 20 films, including DODGE CITY (1939), ALL THIS, AND HEAVEN TOO and KNUTE ROCKNE ALL AMERIAN (both 1940), THE BRIDE CAME C.O.D. and DIVE BOMBER (both 1941), CAPTAINS OF THE CLOUDS (1942), AIR FORCE (1943), PASSAGE TO MARSEILLE and TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (both 1944), SPELLBOUND (1945), DEVOTION (1946), THE MAN WHO CHEATED HIMSELF (1950), and his last film, DARLING LILI (1970).
