Ken Adam

Born Klaus Adam in Berlin, Germany; his family emigrated to England to avoid the Nazis in 1934; studied architecture at London University and was the only German RAF fighter pilot in WW II. He entered the film industry in 1947 as a draftsman on THIS WAS A WOMAN, became an art director in mid-50s and a production designer in the early 60s. His work has been known for its stylish inventiveness and sense of humor. Among his creations was the War Room in DR. STRANGELOVE... (1964) and the glittering interior of Fort Knox in GOLDFINGER (1964). He shared an Oscar for the art direction on Kubrick's BARRY LYNDON (1975) and won his own for THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE (1994). Other recent credits include BOYS ON THE SIDE (1995), BOGUS (1996), IN & OUT (1997), THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS (1999) and TAKING SIDES (2001).
