Born in New Jersey, USA. Former saxophone player for the Meyer Davis orchestra, he worked as a musician in vaudeville until 1930. Entered American film as an editor at Universal for Tom Mix's FLAMING GUNS (1932) and eventually ended up at MGM as editor of some of their big musicals of the 1940s and '50s. Other notable credits include PRINCESS O'HARA (1935), FORBIDDEN PASSAGE (1941), JOHNNY EAGER (1942), GIRL CRAZY (1943), BROADWAY RHYTHM and MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (both 1944), WHAT NEXT, CORPORAL HARGROVE? (1945), ZIEGFELD FOLLIES and TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY (both 1946), GOOD NEWS (1947), EASTER PARADE and WORDS AND MUSIC (both 1948), THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY (1949), SUMMER STOCK (1950), ROYAL WEDDING and THE STRIP (both 1951), THE BELLE OF NEW YORK and BECAUSE YOU'RE MINE (both 1952), THE BAND WAGON and TORCH SONG (both 1953), BRIGADOON (1954), MOONFLEET and TRIAL (both 1955) and MEET ME IN LAS VEGAS and SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME (both 1956).
