Born in London, England. Intelligent, dependable director who through the 1950s and 60s made a series of war films, notably THE DAM BUSTERS (1954) and the spy thriller, THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM (1966), occasionally taking a break from the battle to helm such literary adaptations as 1984 (1956), AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (1956), THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN (1968), POPE JOAN (1972), LOGAN'S RUN (1976) and ORCA (1977). His most recent recorded credit is directing THE NEW ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO (1999), which starred Martin Landau as Geppetto. Father of actor Michael Anderson Jr.
