Born Ermes Effron Borgnino in Hamden, CT; son of Italian immigrants. Stout, unglamorous character player who was critically noted for his fine performance as the lovelorn butcher in Delbert Mann's MARTY (1955). Borgnine was also excellent as the sadistic Sgt. "Fatso" Judson in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953), as the menacing outlaw Dutch Engstrom in THE WILD BUNCH (1969) but is best known as the mischievous, fun-seeking Lt. Commander on TV's "McHale's Navy" (1962-66, Emmy nomination).
