Stephen Bosustow
(1911 - 1981)
Biography from Katz's Film Encyclopedia

Born in Victoria, BC, Canada, he won an art prize at the age of 11 and began working professionally at animation in the early 30s. He worked with Ub Iwerks on FLIP THE FROG in 1932 and with Walter Lantz in 1933 and joined Walt Disney as an animator-writer in 1934. In 1941 he led a rebellion of dissident artists against autocratic rule and artistic stagnation at the Disney studio and in the wake of the dispute resigned and joined Hughes Aircraft as a design illustrator. In 1942 he formed his own company and among other animated films made a famous cartoon for President Franklin D. Roosevelt's re-election campaign, HELL-BENT FOR ELECTION (1944).

In 1945 he and several other disenchanted Disney artists formed UPA (United Productions of America), an independent animation company that allowed its artists great creative freedom and experimented with a wide variety of animation styles. While president of UPA he personally produced many of its cartoons, including three Academy Award winners. He sold his share in the company in 1961 and formed Stephen Bosustow Productions, producers of educational shorts and travel documentaries. After his death the company was run by his sons, Ted and Nick.
