Born in Brooklyn, NY. Tall and imposing romantic leading man of Hollywood silents of the early 20s, he is best remembered for his powerful character roles in MGM films of the 50s, notably as the criminal mastermind in THE ASPHALT JUNGLE (1950), as Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in THE MAGNIFICENT YANKEE (1950), and as Caesar in JULIUS CAESAR (1953). Also made numerous Broadway appearances. Was married to screen actresses Ilka Chase, Julia Hoyt, Natalie Schaefer, and Marianne Stewart. He died of a heart attack in Tokyo during the filming of THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON (1956).
