Graduate of the Univ. of Southern California (1933, Architecture). A member of the 1940 US Olympic fencing team -- but unable to compete because of the Games' cancellation. Carfagno established himself as a Hollywood art director at MGM in the 1950s with such films as Vincente Minnelli's THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL (1952), Joseph Mankiewicz's JULIUS CAESAR (1953) and William Wyler's BEN-HUR (1959). Carfagno worked consistently on a variety of films, including five collaborations as production designer with director Clint Eastwood.
