Born Mary Margaret Cass in Boston, MA, she made her professional stage debut in 1945 on an Australian tour with The Doughgirls. Later appeared in many revues and Broadway stage productions, mainly in comedy parts, winning a Tony Award for her performance in the role of Agnes Gooch in Auntie Mame. She was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar® for repeating that role in the 1958 screen version of the play. Her film appearances were rare (THE MARRYING KIND, 1952; IT IT'S TUESDAY, THIS MUST BE BELGIUM, 1969; PADDY, 1970; CHEATERS, 1984; and THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES, 1993), but she was seen often on TV as a guest of talk shows and a panelist on game shows.
