Prof. Henri Chrétien
(1879 - 1956)
Biography from Katz's Film Encyclopedia

Invented the anamorphic lens, which he exhibited in 1927 as the Hypergonar. Director Claude Autant-Lara experimented with the lens in a short, CONSTRUIRE UN FEU (1928), but the invention was neglected until 1952, when it was acquired by 20th Century-Fox and then adapted for the company's CinemaScope process, which was launched the following year. Anamorphic lenses are now used in a variety of widescreen processes.
