Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
Born in New Brunswick, Canada. A nephew of MGM boss Louis B. Mayer, he joined the studio at 17. Worked his way up from MGM office boy through script clerk, assistant director, and short-subject director-producer (incl. several Ted Healy Stooges shorts) before becoming a feature producer in 1934. In charge of many successful MGM musicals: BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940 (1940), NEPTUNE'S DAUGHTER (1949), THREE LITTLE WORDS (1950), KISS ME KATE! (1953), THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS (1954); THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON (1956); CAN CAN (1960), VIVA LAS VEGAS (1964).

Cummings was married to Betty Kern, daughter of composer Jerome Kern. Cummings later produced a 1952 remake of his father-in-law's 1933 stage musical, Roberta, entitled LOVELY TO LOOK AT. (ROBERTA had previously been filmed by RKO in 1935.)
