Born Bernard Schwartz in the Bronx, NY. Curtis began his career at Universal in 1949, where he appeared in mainly pretty-boy roles for a decade. His performance as the seedy, ruthless Sidney Falco in SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (1957) led to more substantial parts, most notably in THE DEFIANT ONES (1958), opposite Sidney Poitier, and SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959), as a musician who goes on the run from a Chicago mob -- in drag -- and tries to win the heart of Marilyn Monroe en route. Some of his other notable film credits include THE VIKINGS (1958), OPERATION PETTICOAT (1959), SPARTACUS (1960), THE GREAT IMPOSTOR (1962), CAPTAIN NEWMAN, M.D. (1963), GOODBYE CHARLIE (1964), THE GREAT RACE (1965), THE BOSTON STRANGLER (1968) and THE MIRROR CRACK'D (1980).
Married to actresses Janet Leigh (1951-1962) and Christine Kaufman (1963-1967). Daughters, with Leigh, are actresses Kelly Curtis (b. 1956) and Jamie Lee Curtis (b. 1958).
