Born in London, England. In Hollywood from the late 1930s following a long spell on Broadway, he scored numerous films for Warner Bros., MGM, and other studios, winning Academy Awards for the orchestrations of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (1950), SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS (1954) and OKLAHOMA! (1955).
Some of his notable (non-nominated) film scores include MR. DODD TAKES THE AIR (1937), DODGE CITY (1939, uncredited), GONE WITH THE THE WIND (1939, some scenes - uncredited), THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT (1940), HIGH SIERRA and THE MALTESE FALCON (both 1941), ACROSS THE PACIFIC (1942), ACTION IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC (1943), WHISPERING SMITH (1948), LITTLE WOMEN and THE STRATTON STORY (both 1949), FATHER OF THE BRIDE (1950), MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID (1952), TORCH SONG (1953), THE LONG, LONG TRAILER (1954), INTERRUPTED MELODY (1955), TEA AND SYMPATHY (1956), FUNNY FACE (1957), THE MATCHMAKER (1958), SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959), THE APARTMENT (1960), and his last film, GO NAKED IN THE WORLD (1961).
