Born in London, England. Prolific 1930s screenwriter: worked for Michael Balcon at Gaumont-British, 1932-35, moved to Warner, then joined Ealing in 1939 for a dozen years of mainly collaborative projects including both KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS (1949) and THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT (1951). Author of the play The Happiest Days of Your Life and of its popular film adaptation (non-Ealing, 1950), and writer of some 1950s Hollywood films after leaving Ealing (ROMAN HOLIDAY, 1953, SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL, 1959).
