Child star of Hollywood films of the 40s and early 50s, memorable in several Disney productions and as the boy who witnesses a murder in Ted Tezlaff's thriller THE WINDOW (1949), following which he won a special Academy Award as "the outstanding juvenile actor of 1949." He was the first "live" actor to sign a long-term contract with Disney's animation studios, where he starred in such popular productions as SONG OF THE SOUTH (1946), SO DEAR TO MY HEART (1948), and TREASURE ISLAND (1950). His career faltered, however, when he reached his teens, and he was unable to obtain work in films or on TV except on scattered occasions.
Unable to adjust to the new conditions, he became a drug addict and was arrested several times for various offenses. In 1965 he moved to New York City, where three years later his body was found in the rubble of an abandoned tenement, the victim of a heart attack. He was buried in a pauper's grave. It was not until 1969, a full year after the burial, that, through fingerprints, the body was identified as that of Driscoll.
