Born in Manchester, England; educated at Westminster Abbey Choir School and the Royal College of Music. During World War II, he was assigned to India and was able to follow his interest in Indian music and its special instruments. Composer of several operas and ochestral works, he was often used by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger to compose original music and score for most of their films that called for it, from BLACK NARCISSUS (1947) to THE QUEEN'S GUARDS (1961). He was twice married and is survived by three daughters and two sons.
