Born Anthony Papaleo in New York City. An intense performer, he worked his way up in five years from bit parts off-Broadway to a Broadway debut in 1953. His success in Broadway's 'A Hatful of Rain' (1955) led to an invitation from Hollywood to repeat the role on the screen, an effort that resulted in an Oscar® nomination. He appeared in numerous films in a variety of lead roles, working mostly in Europe from 1975. On TV, he starred in 'Valentine's Day' (1964-65), 'The Name of the Game' (1968-71), and 'Matt Helm' (1975-76), and was featured in the 1986 made-for-TV remake of 'Stagecoach,' among other series and programs. His second wife (1957-60) was Shelley Winters.
