Born in New York City. Writer who entered American film with the screenplay for DANGEROUS INTRUDER (1945). Other notable non-nominated credits (alone or in collaboration) include SHAKEDOWN (1950), MISSION OVER KOREA (1953), OVERLAND PACIFIC (1954), HELL'S ISLAND (1955), FORT MASSACRE (1958), and THE GUNFIGHT AT DODGE CITY, CAST A LONG SHADOW and episodes for the TV series "The Twilight Zone" (all 1959). He adapted his novel Detour to the screen in 1945; it was remade by Wade Williams in 1992.

Goldsmith's brother-in-law was actor Anthony Quinn.
