Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film

Born Lyova Haskell Rosenthal in New York City. She made a stunning screen debut as the shoplifter in DETECTIVE STORY (1951) but was blacklisted shortly afterward for failing to testify against her already blacklisted husband, playwright Arnold Manoff. Following 12 years of near inactivity Grant resurfaced in the 1960s, appearing in numerous character parts. She turned her hand to both feature and TV directing, gaining acclaim with her 1985 documentary, DOWN AND OUT IN AMERICA (1986), which she directed and narrated, and which received an Oscar® for Best Documentary. Some of her notable screen acting credits include MAROONED (1969), PLAZA SUITE (1971), AIRPORT '77 (1977), DAMIEN: THE OMEN II (1978), DEFENDING YOUR LIFE (1991), IT'S MY PARTY (1996), POOR LIZA (1998), DR. T & THE WOMEN and THE AMATI GIRLS (both 2000), MULHOLLAND DR. (2001), and GOING SHOPPING (2005). In television, she has appeared in episodes of dozens of series and several made-for-TV movies.

In 1983, Grant received the Congressional Arts Caucus Award for Outstanding Achievement in Acting and Independent Filmmaking. She directed 1986's "Nobody's Child" for CBS, for which she received the Directors Guild Award. Subquently, Women in Film paid tribute to her in 1989, with their first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award. Both the New York City Council and the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors have recognized Ms. Grant for the contribution her films have made to the fight against domestic violence. Her "Intimate Portrait" series, which she began directing in 1998, runs on Lifetime Television.

She was married to Manoff from 1951 until 1960. She is the mother of actress Dinah Manoff (b. 1958). In 1962, she married TV producer Joseph Feury.
