Born in The Bronx, NY. A lifelong collaborator with Betty Comden, with whom he began performing in night clubs in 1944, then wrote book and lyrics for many hit Broadway musicals and screenplays for a number of highly successful motion pictures: GOOD NEWS (1947), TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME (songs only), ON THE TOWN and THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY (all 1949), SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952), AUNTIE MAME (1958) and BELLS ARE RINGING (1960). He also appeared as an actor in several films. He married actress Phyllis Newman in 1960.
