Born Henry Graham Greene in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England. The noted writer of adventure novels with psychological and religious overtones (he and his wife were famous converts to Roman Catholicism). He wrote a number of important screenplays, and many of his books were adapted to the screen by others. His notable non-nominated screenwriting credits include 21 DAYS (1940), BRIGHTON ROCK (1947), THE THIRD MAN (1949), SAINT JOAN (1957) and OUR MAN IN HAVANA (1959). Others' adaptations of his works include THIS GUN FOR HIRE (1942), MINISTRY OF FEAR (1944), THE FUGITIVE (1947), THE END OF THE AFFAIR (1955 and 1999), THE QUIET AMERICAN (1958 and 2002), THE COMEDIANS (1967) and TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT (1972).
In the late 1930s Greene was film critic for the Spectator. His reviews were collected in the book Greene on Film (1972).
