Born in San Francisco, CA. Writer-producer-director who entered American film as a cinematographer for silent movies (SPRING FEVER and JUST NEIGHBORS, both 1919) at Pathé. He began directing shorts at Hal Roach in 1923 (HEAVY SEAS) and directed over a dozen Laurel and Hardy shorts and features between 1926 and 1928. Active in almost all areas of the business, some of his notable credits include (as art director) SAFETY LAST! (1923); (as associate director) A PLACE IN THE SUN (1951) and SHANE (1953); (as producer) PENNY SERANADE (assoc. prod.) and NIAGARA FALLS (both 1941), ABOUT FACE (1942), THE MORE THE MERRIER (1943, assoc. prod.), HERE COMES TROUBLE (1948, also director) and TWO KNIGHTS FROM BROOKLYN (1949); (as writer) GUNGA DIN (1939, screenplay), VIGIL IN THE NIGHT (1940) and ABROAD WITH TWO YANKS (1944); and (as director) TANKS A MILLION (1941), HAY FOOT (1942) and MR. WALKIE TALKIE (1952).
