Born in Worcester, MA, and educated at the University of Massachusetts, he wrote scripts for many Hollywood films of the 1950s and 60s, alone or in collaboration, notably several Hitchcock productions: REAR WINDOW (1954), TO CATCH A THIEF and THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (both 1955); and THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1956). Other notable screenwriting credits (alone or in collaboration) include THUNDER BAY and TORCH SONG (both 1953), THE MATCHMAKER and SEPARATE TABLES (both 1957), BUTTERFIELD 8 (1960), THE CHILDREN'S HOUR (1961), THE CHALK GARDEN and WHERE LOVE HAS GONE (both 1964), HARLOW (1965), NEVADA SMITH (1966), WALKING TALL (1973, uncredited) and IRON WILL (1994).
