Leland Hayward

Born in Nebraska City, NE. A highly successful stage producer, talent agent, and airline executive, as well as one of the most colorful characters in American show business, early in his career he worked in the publicity department of First National and as production manager for HIGH HAT, BROADWAY NIGHTS and DANCE MAGIC (all 1927). He produced three Hollywood films in the late 1950s (MISTER ROBERTS, 1955; THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS, 1957; and THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA, 1958) in addition to a long string of Broadway hits: A Bell for Adano, Mister Roberts, Anne of the Thousand Days, South Pacific, Call Me Madam, Gypsy, The Sound of Music, Goodbye Charlie, Mr. President and The Trial of the Cantonsville Nine.

His second wife (1935-1948) was Margaret Sullavan. Their daughter is actress Brooke Hayward (b. 1936), author of Haywire, a tragic memoir of the family and the events that led to Sullavan's death.
