Born in London. Entered British films as a clapper boy in 1932 and worked as a camera operator on such films as THE DIVORCE OF LADY X (1938), PIMPERNEL SMITH (1941), HENRY V (1945), and CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA (1946). Became a lighting cameraman in 1946 and subsequently worked on British and US productions. His other films include BREAKING THROUGH THE SOUND BARRIER (1953); HOBSON'S CHOICE (1954); ANASTASIA (1956); SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER and THE SUNDOWNERS (1960); CLEOPATRA (some sequences only), 55 DAYS AT PEKING and THE V.I.P.'S (all 1963); THE YELLOW ROLLS-ROYCE (1964); THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE (1965); MODESTY BLAISE (1966); CASINO ROYALE (1967); TOPAZ (1969); and LION OF THE DESERT (1981).
