Born Josephine Sherwood in Newtonville, MA. A celebrated stage character actress, she appeared in only a handful of films but left a lasting memory in two -- ARSENIC AND OLD LACE (1944) and HARVEY (1950). She won an Academy Award as best supporting actress for the latter. Her other screen credits are AFTER TOMORROW and CARELESS LADY (both 1932) and THE LADY FROM TEXAS (1951). From 1949 until 1955, she made several appearances on television, appeariing mainly in televised dramas on such series as "The Ford Theatre Hour," "Studio One," "Lux Video Theatre" and "Lights Out."
She was married to actor Henry Hull's brother, Shelley Hull (also an actor), who died in 1919.
