Born Carolyn Sue Baker in Amarillo, TX; trained at the Pasadena (CA) Playhouse. Versatile leading lady and second lead of Hollywood films with distinctive looks and offbeat style. A former disc jockey and stage player in stock, she was nominated for an Oscar® for her supporting role in THE BACHELOR PARTY (1957). Other notable film appearances include 1952: ROAD TO BALI; 1953: HOUSE OF WAX, THE BIG HEAT; 1954: DESIREE; 1955: THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, THE TENDER TRAP; 1956: INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, THE OPPOSITE SEX; 1958: MARJORIE MORNINGSTAR, KING CREOLE; 1959: CAREER; 1962: SAIL A CROOKED SHIP, HOW THE WEST WAS WON; 1969: COLOR ME DEAD; 1977: EATEN ALIVE. She gained wide popularity in the mid-1960s in the role of Morticia in "The Addams Family" TV series.
Her first husband (1953-1965) was producer Aaron Spelling. She was married to director Herbert S. Greene from 1968 until 1977. She married her boyfriend of five years, Peter Bailey-Britton, less than a year before her death from cancer.
