Born Maria Cristina Estella Marcella Jurado de Garcia in Guadalajara, Mexico. In Hollywood as a columnist for Mexican publications following a Mexican film career, she played sensuous, exotic leads and supporting roles in a variety of films, most memorably in HIGH NOON (1952) and ONE-EYED JACKS (1961). She was nominated for an Oscar for her supporting role in BROKEN LANCE (1954), becoming the first Mexican actress ever to be nominated for an Academy Award. Other notable films include: 1953: SAN ANTONE; 1955: TRIAL; 1956: TRAPEZE; 1958: THE BADLANDERS; 1962: BARABBAS; 1966: SMOKY; 1968: STAY AWAY, JOE (Reportedly gained 22 pounds in 22 days to play the part of Annie Lightcloud in the movie. Days before filming she broke her foot and removed the cast prematurely which explains her limp throughout the film); 1973: PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID; 1978: THE CHILDREN OF SANCHEZ; 1984: UNDER THE VOLCANO.

Formerly (1959-64) wed to Ernest Borgnine, who once described her as "beautiful, but a tiger." She died of a heart attack in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
