Helen Levitt in the 1940s

Born Pearl Helen Slote in Brooklyn, NY. An accomplished still photographer/photojournalist, she entered American film as a front for her husband, Alfred Lewis (Al) Levitt, who was blacklisted and adopted the pseudonym Tom August. She was a co-writer for the 1948 documentary, THE QUIET ONE. She used the name Helen August for screenplays she and her husband wrote together. These included THE MISADVENTURES OF MERLIN JONES (1964) and THE MONKEY'S UNCLE (1965), as well as scripts for the TV series "Bewitched," "Love on a Rooftop," "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" and "The Bionic Woman." In 1963, she produced Ben Maddow's feature AN AFFAIR OF THE SKIN (a.k.a. "Love as a Disorder"), which starred Herbert Bergof, Lee Grant, Viveca Lindfors and Kevin McCarthy. She posthumously shared the Morgan Cox Award with Levitt that was given by the Writers Guild of America in 1995. An extensive account of the Levitts' Blacklist experience may be found at the WGA web site.
