Born in New York City. A former lawyer, he wrote the scripts for many "Andy Hardy" episodes as well as other routine screenplays. Other notable screenwriting credits (alone or in collaboration) include BLACKMAIL! (1939), LOVE CRAZY (1941), GIRL CRAZY (1943), JULIA MISBEHAVES (1948), CHALLENGE TO LASSIE (1949), THE GREAT CARUSO (1951), THE MERRY WIDOW (1952), THE STUDENT PRINCE (1954), OKLAHOMA! (1955) and BACK STREET (1961). He shared an Academy Award for the original screenplay of INTERRUPTED MELODY (1955). He was also a writer for the 48th (1976) and 50th (1978) Annual Academy Awards shows.
Ludwig was a founder of the Screen Writers Guild, now the Writers Guild of America, and he was secretary-treasurer of that union for 18 years. In the 1960s, he promoted the development of the Guild's pension fund. Appropriately, he died at the Motion Picture and Television Fund hospital, which the Guild's fund (together with other motion picture industry unions) helped establish.
