Born in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan. Noted production designer and art director in Japanese films from the late 1930s through the 1960s. Associated with many (12) of the films of director Akira Kurosawa, Matsuyama's non-nominated Kurosawa credits include (USA titles) COMPOSITION CLASS (1938), HORSE (1941), FOUR LOVE STORIES (1947), DRUNKEN ANGEL (1948), FLIRTATION IN SPRING (1949), ESCAPE AT DAWN (1950), THE IDIOT (1951), VENDETTA OF A SAMURAI and DOOMED (both 1952) and STRAY DOG (1963). Other art director credits include THE BURMESE HARP (1956), ALONE IN THE PACIFIC and THE TEMPTRESS AND THE MONK (both 1963) and THE SCARLET CAMELLIA (1965).
