Set decorator who entered American film at Republic Pictures with DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST (1943). He remained at Republic until the studio shifted into television production at the end of the 1950s. During that time, he was set decorator on virually every Republic picture, with over 325 credits. (See the Internet Movie DataBase for a complete list.) He worked briefly in television series ("Frontier Doctor," "Thriller," "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour," and "McHale's Navy"), then returned to feature films at Universal. Subsequent credits include THE RAIDERS, THE KILLERS, McHALE'S NAVY, SEND ME NO FLOWERS, THE LIVELY SET, KITTEN WITH A WHIP and FATHER GOOSE (all 1964), SHENANDOAH (1965), MADAME X, THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN, THE PLAINSMAN, TEXAS ACROSS THE RIVER and GAMBIT (all 1966), TOBRUK (1967), SERGEANT RYKER, THE SECRET WAR OF HARRY FRIGG, MADIGAN, THE HELL WITH HEROES, COOGAN'S BLUFF and HELLFIGHTERS (all 1968), DEATH OF A GUNFIGHTER, CHANGE OF HABIT and TELL THEM WILLIE BOY IS HERE (all 1969), COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT (1970), SHOOT OUT (1971), SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE and ULZANA'S RAID (both 1972) and CONRACK (1974). McCarthy also worked on several TV series and made-for-television movies.
