Born in Mississippi, USA. Costume designer who entered American film with PEPPER (1936) at 20th Century-Fox. Sometimes credited as simply "Herschel," his subsequent notable film credits include several of Fox's "Charlie Chan" and "Mr. Moto" pictures (1936-1939), THE MAN WHO WOULDN'T DIE and IT HAPPENED IN FLATBUSH (both 1942), MY FRIEND FLICKA (1943), TULSA (1949), QUO VADIS? (1951), JULIUS CAESAR and DREAM WIFE (both 1953) and his last picture, THE PRODIGAL (1955). He was costume supervisor for JOAN OF ARC (1948).
