Sad-eyed juvenile, then young lead of the US stage, films, and TV. Born in the Bronx, NY, and dismissed from a parochial school at eight as a troublemaker, he began attending a dancing class and two years later he was cast as a child in the Broadway production of The Rose Tattoo. In 1952 he took over the part of Yul Brynner's son in The King and I. He made his first film appearance in 1955 and subsequently appeared in many screen productions, typically portraying troubled youths. Some of his notable screen credits include SIX BRIDGES TO CROSS, THE PRIVATE WAR OF MAJOR BENSON and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (all 1955), SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME and GIANT (both 1956), TONKA (1958), A PRIVATE AFFAIR and THE GENE KRUPA STORY (both 1959), EXODUS (1960), THE LONGEST DAY (1962), CHEYENNE AUTUMN (1964), THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (1965), KRAKATOA, EAST OF JAVA (1969), ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES (1971) and SONIC BOOM (1974). He also appeared in numerous TV productions from 1952 until 1976, and he directed a play, Fortune and Men's Eyes, on the West Coast and on Broadway. He was stabbed to death as he returned to his Hollywood home from a rehearsal for another play.
