Born in Wexford, Ireland. Character actor and idiosyncratic leading man who performed with the Gate Theatre and the Abbey Players in Dublin before immigrating to the US in the late 1940s. O'Herlihy joined Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre and played MacDuff opposite Welles's Macbeth in both the stage and (1948) screen versions of the Scottish play. He is known for his title role in Buñuel's THE ADVENTURES OF ROBINSON CRUSOE (1952, released in the US in 1954). Other notable film credits include ODD MAN OUT, HUNGRY HILL and LARCENY (all 1947), KIDNAPPED (1948), SOLDIERS THREE, THE DESERT FOX: THE STORY OF ROMMEL and THE BLUE VEIL (all 1951), INVASION USA (1952), THE VIRGIN QUEEN (1955), IMITATION OF LIFE and THE YOUNG LAND (both 1959), A TERRIBLE BEAUTY (1960), FAIL-SAFE (1964), WATERLOO (1970), THE CAREY TREATMENT (1972), THE TAMARIND SEED (1974), MACARTHUR (1977), HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH (1982), THE LAST STARFIGHTER (1984), ROBOCOP and THE DEAD (both 1987) and ROBOCOP 2 (1990). Beginning in 1959, O'Herlihy appeared frequently on television. He had the recurring role of Andrew Packard on "Twin Peaks" (1990-1991), and he appeared in several made-for-TV movies.
