Born in London, England; in Italy from age seven. He graduated from law school, then turned to journalism as an art and literary critic. He entered Italian films in the late 1930s, initially dubbing voices for English-speaking films. He began collaborating on screenplays in 1941 (LE DUE TIGRI and PIRATI DELLA MALESIA) and turned out his first film as a director (NEBBIA SUL MARE) two years later. But it was as an actor that he first became known internationally, playing the key role of Manfredi in Roberto Rossellini's OPEN CITY (1945) / ROMA, CITTÀ APERTA. The following year he contributed one of the stories for and collaborated on the screenplay of Rossellini's PAISÀ / PAISAN (1946) / PAISÁ. In 1947 he moved to France, where he continued his activities as both director and actor, returning occasionally to work in Italy. He did not make any feature films from 1960, but he appeared in several as an actor and directed a number of productions for French TV.
