Born Sidney Joseph Perelman in Brooklyn, NY; educated at Brown University (Class of 1925). One of the leading funnymen of American letters, he was invited to Hollywood in the early 30s to collaborate as a gag and screenwriter on two Marx Brothers films (MONKEY BUSINESS, 1931, and HORSE FEATHERS, 1932), following the success of his first humorous book, Dawn Ginsberg's Revenge (1929). Later during his varied literary career he collaborated on occasional film stories and screenplays, sometimes with his wife Laura, a sister of writer Nathaniel West. These credits include HOLD 'EM JAIL (1932), SITTING PRETTY (1933), PARIS INTERLUDE (1934, from his play All Good Americans), FLORIDA SPECIAL (1936), AMBUSH (1939), THE GOLDEN FLEECING (1940), LARCENY, INC. (1942, play), ONE TOUCH OF VENUS (1948, book for musical play) and AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (1956). Perelman was a prolific writer of books, essays and criticism.
