Born Andre Ludwig Prewin in Berlin, Germany. Began working in films in the late 1940s and contributed memorable scores to a number of powerful dramas as well as musical direction/supervision on several big budget musicals of the 1950s and 60s, notably GIGI (1958) and PORGY AND BESS (1959). Other notable unnominated composing credits include KIM (1950), BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK (1955), INVITATION TO THE DANCE (1956), DESIGNING WOMAN (1957), ONE, TWO THREE (1961), LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (1962), THE FORTUNE COOKIE and INSIDE DAISY CLOVER (both 1966), VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (songs, 1967), PAINT YOUR WAGON (add'l songs, 1969), MRS. POLLIFAX -- SPY (1971, song "Merdita"), BANG BANG (1973) and music for the mini-series "Jennie: Lady Randolph Churchill" (1975).
Former wives include Betty Bennett (1950s); composer-lyricist Dory (Langdon) Previn (1958-1965); actress Mia Farrow (1970-1979), with whom he had 3 sons and 3 adopted children; and Heather Mary Previn (1982-1999). He married violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter in 2002.
