Born in Shelton, WA. Writer who entered American film as an uncredited title writer for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925). He wrote titles for 20 other silent films. With the advent of sound, he wrote dialogue for a number of early talkies. His notable screenplay credits include WATERLOO BRIDGE (1931), MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (1932), S.O.S. EISBERG (1933), THE MAN WITH TWO FACES and BABBIT (adaptation) (both 1934), THE CAPTAIN'S KID (1936, also uncredited director), ON DRESS PARADE (1939), THE SPOILERS (1942), UP IN MABEL'S ROOM (1944), THE SPIRIT OF WEST POINT (1947), THE UNTAMED BREED (1948), DAVID HARDING, COUNTERSPY (1950), SOLDIERS THREE (1951), THE LIGHT TOUCH (1952, story), BACK TO GOD'S COUNTRY (1953) and NIGHT PEOPLE (1954, story). He also wrote for the TV series "Mr. & Mrs. North," "The Adventures of Jim Bowie" and "Blondie."
