Born in Akron, OH. Entered American film as a cinematographer in 1913 for BARBAROUS MEXICO. Continued as a d.p. through the late 1920s, working mainly on Westerns and Stan Laurel shorts. He first worked in effects photography for THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (1929). He was responsible for Fred Astaire's shoe effects in THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY (1949) and contributed special effects for several other films, such as THE CANTERVILLE GHOST (1944, uncredited), AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951), SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, SCARAMOUCHE and PLYMOUTH ADVENTURE (all 1952), DANGEROUS WHEN WET and GIVE A GIRL A BREAK (both 1953), IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER (1955) and FORBIDDEN PLANET and INVITATION TO THE DANCE (both 1956).
